(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ji-sun: The Korean National Commission for UNESCO (Secretary-General Han Kyung-gu) announced that it held the '2024 Internationally Designated Area Manager Capacity Building Workshop' in Jeju Island from the 19th to the 22nd of November.
The event was jointly organized with the Global Research and Training Centre for Internationally Designated Areas Under the auspices of UNESCO (GCIDA) and the Korean National Committee for the Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB Korea).
Around 50 managers of Internationally Designated Areas in Korea, including World Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves, Global Geoparks, and Ramsar Wetlands, attended the workshop.
They shared strategies for promoting local community participation in the sustainable management of World Heritage Sites and wetlands, as well as strategies for promoting Jeju Island and Hantan River Global Geoparks. Participants also suggested ideas for managing Internationally Designated Areas. The group visited the Camellia Hill in Seonheul-ri, Jeju's Jocheon-eup, and the Ojo-ri coastal wetlands in Seogwipo City.
Secretary-General Han Kyung-gu stated, "Jeju Island, with its Internationally Designated Areas, is a model case showing how natural conservation and sustainable development can coexist. It demonstrates the realization of both values through cooperation with local communities.“
