UNESCO Global Research and Training Centre for Internationally Designated Areas (GCIDA) Launches Staff Capacity Building Training Program

The UNESCO Global Research and Training Centre for Internationally Designated Areas (GCIDA) conducted a staff capacity building training program from November 27th to 29th, with participation from GCIDA staff and relevant stakeholders.

This training aimed to enhance the job skills and basic competencies of the center’s new employees, following its establishment in April. It was organized by GCIDA and supported by the Ministry of Environment, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and the Korea National Park Service, with expert instructors from various fields leading in-depth lectures.

The training covered topics such as understanding UNESCO, the management status of Internationally Designated Areas, and integrated management strategies for multi-internationally designated areas (MIDAs). It also included training on international business etiquette, effective communication, and the prevention of sexual harassment and workplace bullying.

Notably, the lecture on "Understanding UNESCO" by Kim Eun-young, Director of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, and the lecture on "Integrated Management Strategies for Multi-Internationally Designated Areas" by Lee Soo-jae, Honorary Commissioner of the Korea Environment Institute, received high praise from participants.
GCIDA officials stated, "This training provided an opportunity for new employees to strengthen their expertise and develop global-level job performance capabilities. Moving forward, we will continue to offer a variety of educational programs to support research and training for improving the management of Internationally Designated Areas in a harmonious and integrated way, aligned with the center’s goals for sustainable development.“

GCIDA, which was approved at the 40th UNESCO General Conference in November 2019, was established in Jeju in April, where four Internationally Designated Areas—World Natural Heritage, Biosphere Reserves, Global Geoparks, and Ramsar Wetlands—are designated.
As the first-ever research and training institution for multi-internationally designated areas, GCIDA will engage in policy and international trend research, as well as training for Internationally Designated Area managers and stakeholders. UNESCO will continue to support GCIDA by dispatching experts and facilitating ongoing exchanges, aiming to link GCIDA’s outcomes with UNESCO’s objectives.
